A Collection Of Songs Designed For The Modern Man - With Musical Accompaniment
Long Blog Warning!!!
I've gone and done it!!!
I just can't believe I've paid again for songs I already have countless hundreds of times!
I was in Tesco wanting some blank dvd's and there it was, the latest Roxette GH cd looking at me from the new release's section, the Roxette cd I claimed I'd never buy!
But old habbits die hard, the whole concept of passing a "new" Roxette release in a shop and not buying it hasn't sunk in, the little voices in my head told me to do it!
And to top it all, I was even a little excited about it, just seeing the 2 people who have been my life for the last 16 years looking down from the shelf at me!
And so as I've traveled back from Southampton this morning I've been taken back into the realms of my Roxette fandom.
This doesn't mean I'm about to go silly and buy the box and single, the box is on my Xmas want list which I've sent to Father Christmas and as for the single, if I see it cheap on eBay I may consider it for old times sake.
I also have 3 seperate lots of friends! Theres friends at work who know I love Roxette but don't know just how much I am obsessed!( or they do know they're just trying to ignore it), Theres Rox friends who are just like me, completely insane! and then theres hockey friends who know I like some Swedish band that sung a song in a film, but have no idea how much I really like them and if they did they'd probably fine me so much money that I'd be broke for the rest of my life so its best I keep fairly quiet on that front!
And then theres John! if it wasn't for Roxette I don't think we would've met!
And me mum, the other half of the looney tunes that have spent nights on train stations, days in Sweden and countless £'s on concert tickets, cd's, posters, t-shirts etc!
So the point of all this is......I still love Roxette! its hard not to really, if you take out the 2 new trax from the compilation then its easy to see why.
Ok so One Wish is well...... too synthy for my liking and Reveal is just bad all round (appart from Marie's voice).
Here's the last 16 years of my life, Roxette style!
A Long Time Ago, In A Galaxy Far far Away!
1990.... sometime around July?
The Look : this was one of them songs I hadn't even heard til I was given a copy of Look Sharp for Christmas 1990 by my uncle.
I'd given him a list of tapes that I would like for Christmas that year and by pure luck I ended up with Look Sharp and not whatever the latest Jason Donovan release was otherwise I may not be here typing this about my fav Swedish band.
Dressed For Success: the 2nd ever Rox single I brought, on tape cassette cos yes I didn't have a cd player in them days! I still have the tape in my archives, I loved this song for its hand claps and an excellent b-side The Voice
Listen To Your Heart: again another track like The Look, I'd heard of it but never really knew it until that Christmas day in 1990! I was very anti social that year! ;-) New walkman, new tape to listen to chirst knows what the bloody film was that year and as for the Queens speach well I think it went something along the lines of....... "Sometimes you wonder if this fight is worthwhile, the precious moments are all lost in the tide, they're swept away and nothing is what it seems the feeling of belonging to your dreams" Ok so that could possibly be the alternate Queens speach, Queen Marie of Sweden >;-)
Dangerous: The first time I ever saw the video for this was on the LookSharp Live vhs, we'd brought it on the way to seeing Oxford Utd play away at Spurs of all places, Oxford lost not that I cared much but I couldn't wait to get home and watch my new video which I said to my mum I'd pay her back for.
I never have, she keeps reminding me of this from time to time ;-)
This is also when my random magazine cutting scrap books started and Kylie and Jason posters gradualy got replaced by a new improved Swedish model which was bigger better and alot faster! ;-)
It Must Have Been Love: the song that started the rot!!! the 1st ever cassette single I ever brought with my own pocket money, played it I dunno how many times, the cassette still lives but its in retirement these days and Paint just rocked as a b-side.
Shortly after buying this I was taken to the Roxette care home where have been for the last 16 years..... ;-)

Somewhere on the Join The Joyride tour, 1991
Joyride: the whistles! you would not believe how long it took me to learn those fucking whistles! Taping the Top40 Chart show on a sunday night on Radio 1 just so I could play it over and over and over again and also cos I wanted Deep Deep Trouble by Bart Simpson ;-)
My 3rd Rox single was brought and off I went on a Joyride.
The video! my first cringe moment! Marie in those god awful leggings! and its only recently that I realized they're actualy supposed to be stood on the wing of a plane, when I say recently I mean in the last couple of years.
Fading Like A Flower: At some point I think my mum got me the Joyride album, I snapped the first cassette I think I must be on #4 by now.
The video for FLAF was what made me want to go to Sweden so I could go up the tower thats in fading like a flower! I found that highly amusing at the time! ;-)
Oh and the smashing rose! how fucking clever was that!
Spending My Time: there was an interview with Rox about this video, there was supposed to be a dog in it but Marie didn't like the dog so they had to get rid of it. I found it funny at the time ;-)
One of Gessle's best lyrics ever: "I tried to call but I don't know what to tell you, I leave a kiss on your answering machine" Pure genius!
How Do You Do!: walking through Sheffield, 17th July 1992 on the way to Sheffield Arena to see the 'ette.
There was a huge great billboard poster of Per and Marie from the HDYD vid, it was advertising the Liveism video.
I was trying to get the poster off the wall but you know what its like they stick them down with industrial strength glue! so I got as far as Marie's knee's when it ripped in half!
Still the concert rocked!! and I got Per's autograph and a plectrum after the show.
We slept on Sheffield train station waiting for the train home, one of those mad moments which you don't ever want to repeat but it was funny at the time!
Almost Unreal: I saw Super Mario Bros 6 times at the cinema because of this song!
"I love when you do that hocus pocus to me...."
Sleeping In My Car: so there was this rumour going around that Roxette had new stuff coming out, I heard it first on Radio 1 cos they used to have exsclusives like that, these days they don't give a shit!
Went to HMV to buy the single on day of relase and thought "Fucking hell! what has Marie done to her hair?" Also this was the year of my first trip to Sweden, my mum rang up the Scandinavium in Göteborg and we managed to get thru to some very nice Swedish lady that spoke perfect English, ordered 2 tickets for Roxette's show on 18th Septmber.
Somehow they arrived! Now this was years before cheap RyanAir flights so we booked a package holiday and took the boat from Harwich to Göteborg (which no longer exsists) and spent 5 very very stange days in Sweden!
I had to buy a new bag for the way back cos I had that much Roxette stuff it wouldn't fit in the ones we had.
Crash! Boom! Bang!: the video was on GMTV and Rox were there to promote it, Penny....whatshername was interviewing and she asked some bizare questions one of which was "Now all I know about Sweden is that you eat cod porrige" and Marie having no clue as to what the stupid woman was on about just said "What?" and looked at Per. LOL I loved that moment!
Run To You: Rox were on tour in the UK, Yes really they used to love us here!! ;-) this song was supposed to be out the same week but true to form EMI released 2 weeks after the event!
Fuckers! this is where the EMI rot set in!
Still, managed to see Roxette 5 times in 1994, not bad going really.

Me and Marie, November 1995
Wish I Could Fly: now I've done some strange things in pursuit of Roxette fandom, one of which was to go to Belgium for the day (yes, just the day!) and buy Have A Nice Day.
The reason behind this was that it was not getting a UK release for up to a month after the Europeans got it.
Now call me stupid if you like but I thought we were part of bloody Europe!
Another EMI fuck up! Rox did eventualy come over and see us here :-) there was a memorable few days which started with an unplugged gig at the Radio Cafe on Leicester Sq in London and then an appearance on the Pepsi Chart show and CD:UK.
WICF even made it to #11 :-D I should bloody well think so cos I brought every format going.......TWICE!
Stars: good video idea, badly filmed! the remixes were good though.
When I went to the city hall in Stockholm I didn't have inclination to go jumping off the wall into that lake, looked too bloody cold to me!!!! and I might have seen them singing ducks, that would've just freaked me out.
The Centre Of The Heart: internet gone mad! knew the album before it arrived, kinda spoilt it really :-( But...... Rox toured and so did I, to Sweden in November!! fucking hell that was cold!

Centre Of The Heart, video 2001
Milk And Toast And Honey: aaaaahhhh Marie's voice, I love it so :-) and if you're watching Gessle, the lyrics ain't half bad either!!

Me & Gessle, Tylosand Hotel, 2003
Marie Dimberg you will never know how much this picture means to me!
A Thing About You: fantastic song but a pretty bad time Rox wise, Marie was sick and everything was in total confusion :-( I don't mind admitting I cried a bit!
Infact its on winamp now and it just reminds me of that time, I loved the video but I just thought we were gonna lose Marie and I think my whole world nearly fell appart!
So....... 2006..... to infinity and beyound?

EMI Sudios, 2006
Me and Roxette, we're not in each others pockets these days but I'd like to think we could go out for a beer from time to time and still have a laugh ;-D
Happy 20th Birthday Roxette *raises a glass* Here's to 20 more years of cringeworthy videos, cheesey lyrics, kick arse guitar riffs and general all round Swedishness!!
